Q.I am 27 weeks pregnant and had the glucose screen today. My doctor said my blood count level was low and to take iron. Are there specific foods that would help increase my iron levels?
- Gina; Boulder, CO ( 5/11/2005 )
Answer #1

Dear Gina, I would recommend in addition to taking iron, you eat more green leafy vegetables and whole grains, red meat, organic calf's liver or chicken liver, beets, cheeries and grapes or cheerya and grape juice. Also concentrate on eating easy to digest foods, including steamed vegetables and whole grains. Avoid cold and frozen foods and drinks, as that will impair the digestion. There is a great supplement to boost iron called Floradex. It is a syrup from Europe. You can get an iron supplement that will not cause constipation throught the health food store. I do not know the brand name of that, however. There are Chinese herbs that are safe to use to strengthen the blood and energy. But you would need to see a Chinese medicine practitioner/acupuncturist for that. Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy. Molly Greacen, Licensed Acupuncturist
