Q.My husband and I have been trying to conceive for almost 5 years and presently, my period is almost 2 weeks late which is unusual for my cycles. We've been to fertility specialists and no one can really put a finger on a problem with either of us. I have no symptoms of pregnancy other than my skin is very oily and I have acne like a teenager, also very constipated for the past week and some minor lower abdominal cramping. I took a home test last night with negative results. Am I better off to just wait it out a week or so more before seeing my doctor or not?

Jessica - I think you can go either direction with that decision. The oily skin and constipation can indicate higher progesterone levels - this can happen with pregnancy and with other conditions. The newer home pregnancy tests are pretty accurate - but if you ovulate late in your cycle, it still may take some time. If your test is still negative in a week - then I would go to your doctor. There are other things that can cause you to miss your period - and with a history of infertility - it is probably wise to check this out. If you have any pain, bleeding or other unusual symptoms you should contact your doctor right away. Let us know how it goes. Cathy Hartt, RN, MS, Health Coach.
