Q.I am currently 33 weeks along in pregnancy. Today I went to the doctor for my weekly check up and when he measured my stomach he said that he was ordering a sonogram for next week because the baby is measuring too small for how far along I am. Should I be concerned? What does this mean? Is there anything I can do? Thanks, Kandra

Kandra - Your provider is probably concerned that your baby may have some growth restriction. I don't know how much weight you have gained, but I would advise you to follow the recommendations of your provider with weight gain. Generally - women should gain 25-35 pounds during pregnancy. I would suggest doing things to maximize growth - eating well and resting some on your side during the day (as well as at night) are probably two effective measures you can take while you wait on the ultrasound results. I would be sure you are following your provider's recommendations for fetal movement counting. Then go for the ultrasound! Some women measure small but the baby is fine on the ultrasound. Be sure to talk to your provider about your concerns and write down your questions to take in to your next visit. Cathy Hartt, RN, MS, Health Coach
