Q.I am currently 31 weeks pregnant with my third boy, and don't know where to turn for help. My past two babies had to be formula-fed after a short, extremely painful breastfeeding stint. I've never been told exactly what my problem is with breastfeeding, no medical specialist has ever been able to diagnose anything and there's only been "ruling-out" of particular diagnoses-- no mastitis, etc. With my last baby three years ago, by the end of the first week of breastfeeding, I called a lactation specialist through the hospital for help and was told that she had never heard any woman describe the sensation I had during feeding, and didn't know what to tell me, so I hung up, cried, and started feeding him formula--- after all, if a lactation consultant couldn't help me, who could? What I described was a feeling as if my baby was sucking out my veins through my nipples--- yes, it's as painful as it sounds. There was even one specific "vein" (or nerve, or whatever) that throbbed and pierced with hot pain each time he suckled-- it went down my left side as he was attached to my left breast. I had to press on it with my hand the entire time he was feeding just to get through the experience. Needless to say it was a little difficult to relax, and I'm sure my milk supply was low because of that. I had the same pain when I tried to pump, and never--- with a Medela or with a hand pump--- could I ever manage to get more than one ounce in a 30 minute pumping session. I would, more than anything else, love to have a pain-free breastfeeding experience with this baby. I would only breastfeed if I could--- I know how much better it is, and believe me my husband and I are cringing at the thought of the expense of formula. Please tell me what I could try to solve this, and that I'm not the only crazy woman in the world who's ever had this problem! Thanks. Kristin Davis Mt. Horeb, WI
