Q.I have a two week old son who I am trying to breastfeed. Initially I was breastfeeding without any assistance, but my nipples are flat so I was having difficulties. When my son was 4 days old I started using a nipple shield, and I have been using it since. I was wondering if it is possible to get my son to breastfeed without using the shield, or is it something I will always have to do now that I started using it? As he gets older will he be better at breastfeeding to where it is no longer neccessary to use the shield? If I can quit using it can you suggest how? And do you have any suggestions to help with flat nipples (nipple shells, or other tools that you might reccomend)? Thank you for your help, Jodi

Hi Jodi Yes, you can start to wean him from the shield. It will be a lot of work, but don't give up. He probably won't like it much initially. Call a local lactation consultant to get a syringe. You can cut the tip of, reverse it, and then put it on your nipples. When you pull out on the syringe, it will pull the nipple out with it. Hold for a several seconds and then you can put him on the breast. As he gets older and stronger, the nipples will start to evert a bit. I'm not going in to great detail on this because it would be good to go over it with a local lactation consultant. good luck Dr. Winkelbauer
